Modifications Make Movement Accessible

If you’ve been following along on my Instagram, you may have noticed I’ve been starting to share more and more exercise modifications. Specifically, I’ve been sharing modifications that are hypermobile friendly. But why? I mean I’m a physical therapist so it makes sense for me to share that sort of content. But why am I passionate about it. Why do I take extra time to put this sort of content out there. Simple - ACCESSIBILITY.

The concept of accessibility isn’t new, but in a way I feel is only considered in very specific instances. Like making sure a building is wheelchair accessible, or say having a sign language interpreter at large events. This is especially true if you don’t interact at all with people with chronic illness, or with people different abilities, or disabilities. Accessibility is important in every sense, in every situation, not just the big ones. Honestly it’s something I’m still learning myself. I’ve learned so much already from being part of this online community on Instagram, but I know I still need to learn more.

This is why I’m starting to share more content specific to what I can offer as a physical therapist. I’m happy that I can use my knowledge to make movement and exercise more accessible. I find when you scroll Instagram you often see really cool things people can do. Cool inversions, challenging PILATES sequences, or dance movements, but you rarely see - hey you can do this too! Movement and exercise should be accessible. Instead of constantly seeing something when scrolling that you can’t or shouldn’t do, what if you start seeing things you CAN do. Or at least learn that there’s a way to change a movement to make it work for you. Not the other way around.

So with that, I will continue to share exercise modifications as I think of them, or as you request them, on my Instagram. Leave a comment on this post and let me know - what modifications would you like to see next? Make sure to follow me on Instagram @thehyperphysio_Kate for more!
